THE CALIFORNIA DERBY.
One of the most important events of the Cali-
fornia turf season, really the most important so
far as the 3-year-olds are concerned, will be de-
cided at Ingleside next Saturday. It is the
California Derby, 1 1-4 miles, for w'hich the
probable starters and jockeys will be as follows :
Burns & Waterhouse’s ch. c. Traverser
(Thorpe), 122.
Willmans Bros, br. c, Morellito (Conley), 122.
S. C. Hildreth’s b. c, Fonsavannah (H.
Shields), 122.
W. E. Applegate Jr’s b. g. Linstock (T. Sloan),
119.
THE INAUGURAL.
The Inaugural Handicap always commands
keen attention at St. Louis. The announce-
ment of the weights Saturday has furnished a
subject for constantly increasing comment,
speculation and interest that will go on until
the fateful 14th of May arrives.
The handicapper had a very good class of
horses to deal with, and, except in the matter
of pitching his scale too low, has discharged his
task in a way that will secure a large field of
starters. Apparently the winner should come
from members of the middle or light weight
divisions, such as Ulysses, 108; Harry Duke,
107 ; Buckvidere, 107 ; The Elector, 106; Flora
Louise, 99, and W’h^t er Lou, 99, all horses of a
high order of speed with a liking for weight off.
Satsuma, 120, is the top weight, followed in
order by Meadowthorpe, 119, Boanerges, 117, Dr.
Sheppard and Timemaker, 115, and Macy, 114.
All are nicely weighted but Algol at 112 certainly
is harshly treated on the basis of his perform-
ances as a three-year-old. Presbyterian is top
weight among the three-year-olds at 107, but the
handicapper rates Count of Flanders practic-
ally his equal with an assignment of 106 pounds.
Of the other three-year-olds Eva Rice, 100;
Gibraltar, 97; Forbush, 97; The Professor, 95;
Belle of Memphis, 94 ; Ed Farrell, 94, and Our
Chance, 92, all had meritorious two-year-old
performances to their credit and all have speed
enough to do a very fast mile.
GOSSIP OF THE TURF.
There will be no Derby at Little Rock this
year, the event having been done away wit-h and
the Arkansas Stakes, a mile dash for 3-year-
olds and upward, substituted. It will be the
feature tomorrow and is expected to have eight
'>5 more contestants, Moncreith, Assignee, Sun-
burst and Marito are probably to represent the
Little Rock trained division, while of the Mem-
phis contingent it is thought that Laureate,
Marquise, Eleanor Holmes and Crocket will go
to the post. The meeting is mainly an affair of
purses, the only other stakes, the Capitol Hotel
and the Iron Mountain, being half mile dashes
for 2-year-olds.
W. F. Schulte has sixteen horses in training
at Louisville under charge of Raleigh Colston,
with the crack filly Alleviate as the bright par-
ticular star. They are as follows :
Zufalig, ch. g, 5, by Argyle— Per-adventure.

NOTES OF THE TURF.
Lieber Karl’s mile workout last Wednesday
was impressive. He broke at the mile pole by
himself, but was joined at the three-quarter
pole by Timemaker, both being full of run.
Lieber Karl’s head was in the air, and his mouth
wide open. The fractional time was: Quarter
in 25, half in 50, three-quarters in 1 :17, mile in
1 :45, galloping in a manner which made look-
ers-on believe he could have done it in 1:424
easily.
Mr. Horatio Bottom ley, who recently pur-
chased the Derby candidate Hawfinch for
$25,000 won his first race two weeks ago in a
selling steeplechase at Plumpton, England,
with the four-year-old Rigo. Rigo is an Ameri-
can bred colt, by Longfellow— Rena B. Twelve
horses started, and Rigo won in a canter. En-
tered to be sold at $250 the colt was bought
in at $1,1.50.
George E. Smith raced six horses last year
and they earned for him the sum of $22,475. Of
this Howard Mann won $10,715, Rubicon, $4,295,
The Winner, $3,185, Belmar, $2,955 and Belde-
mere, $1,325. His horses started forty-eight
times, were first in nineteen races, second in
twelve and third in seven.
Jockey N. Turner, recently suspended at New
Orleans for a suspicious looking ride on Ben
Frost, has been reinstated. Walker’s suspen-
sion also expires at the end of the meeting.
A sudden change in the weather has set many
of the horses in training at Morris Park, Sheeps-
head Bay and Gravesend to coughing.
Jockey N. Hill, ruled off at New Orleans three
years ago, has been reinstated. He is at Little
Rock and will ride there.
Out of the eighty odd entries in the Burns
Handicap, only seven have been declared out.
Mr. James F. Caldwell has been engaged to
do the starting at Oakley this year. !

Start good. Won easily. Sharp drive of five horses behind. Valencienne is an acrobat; but
she IS fast, was best to-day, well ridden and had a clear course. Good Friend ran a good race
She IS fit and was not well handled. The filly needs stout handling. She closed strong. Nubia
ran her race. Blarneystone requires a strong jockey and is but a sprinter. Was killed off by
pacemakmg. So was Hermoso, who ran his race. Abina made up a lot of ground and was badly
ridden. Olive was used too much at the post. Miss Ross, as she is, was outclassed. Lynah is a
coward. She ha.s a world of speed, but is uncertain.

Sevens was not well ridden and ran her race. She has speed and quality. Ireland had hard
luck. He was tangled up on the back stretch and on the turn as the field was straightening out.
